Bad News Bears took down Envy to complete a run through the lower bracket of the DreamHack Masters Spring North America closed qualifier, earning the final spot in the main event.
Bad News Bears join Cloud9 on the team list for the North American division of DreamHack Masters Spring, with Johnny "JT" Theodosiou and his troops having narrowly prevailed over Envy in the upper bracket final on Sunday to advance. A harrowing loss on the final map of that best-of-three, Train, left Envy reeling after the team conceded a humiliating 1vs2 to Josh "oSee" Ohm at 14-13, leading to a defeat in the series.
Envy demonstrated an inability to recover from that loss to Cloud9 as they were felled by Bad News Bears in a two-map series, falling in narrow fashion on Dust2 before being completely demolished on their own pick of Overpass, 16-3.
The start of the series saw Envy enter in good form, running up a 5-0 lead on the T side of Dust2 before Peter "ptr" Gurney's troops got on the board, adding four to their tally. A strong showing from Michał "MICHU" Müller helped Envy maintain a small lead, but it was not enough for them to pull far ahead, with Bad News Bears bringing themselves within one round of their opposition by the break.
Envy initially remained in the lead as the second half got underway, winning five of the first seven rounds for a 13-9 lead, but the momentum of the map swung firmly in the favour of Bad News Bears towards the latter portion of the half as they only dropped one additional round on the road to a 16-14 victory.
Overpass unfolded in stark contrast to the close scoreline of Dust2 as Bad News Bears put up a stalwart defense, crushing Envy's attempts to enter bombsites time and time again to run up a 13-0 scoreline. Two rounds at the end of the half and a subsequent pistol win allowed Envy to put three on the board, but a force-buy from Bad News Bears turned the tides and left no chance for Noah "Nifty" Francis's side to make a comeback, with ptr's side quickly closing things out, 16-3.
